Winter weather is here! We at City Tire want you to stay safe while on the roads, so here are some great tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to keep you car running smoothly in harsh, New England conditions!

Get your car serviced. Now is the best time to make sure that your car is in tip-top shape. City Tire can check your brakes, exhaust, battery, tires, wipers, fluid levels (including wiper fluid and anti-freeze) and much more! Whatever you need to make sure your car is safe on the road.

Inspect your tires. The tread on your tires is what gives you traction and keeps your car gripped to the road. Consider switching to snow tires. They are designed specifically for driving on slick roads. You should also check your air pressure. Cold weather causes the air molecules in your tires to contract, decreasing the air pressure. Low tire pressure is not only dangerous; it also lowers your gas mileage! Not sure what to look for? Bring your car in to City Tire and we’ll inspect your tires – free!

Remember to drive safe. Always allow extra time when you are traveling, especially during the holidays. Leave extra room when following a car, take your time and be cautious when entering an intersection. Make sure to keep your windshield clean; all the dirt and sludge from the roads can really affect your visibility. Keep a road-side emergency kit in your car complete with a car charger for your cell phone, snacks, water, blankets, flares, and tools to repair a flat tire. Remember, it’s better to prevent an accident than to worry about what to do after one!

Check out CarCare.org for more tips, and you can always come to City Tire with your questions!

As City Tire strives to offer its’ customers the latest technology and expertise in the tire industry, we have rolled out Nitrogen inflation in our Springfield, MA location! Nitrogen inflation offers many safety and tire maintenance benefits that regular inflation does not.

Most importantly, Nitrogen inflation increases tire safety. Underinflated tires cause 90% of tire blowouts experienced by drivers. Due to the larger molecule size of Nitrogen, less air is allowed to escape through the body of the tire. A tire using regular air can lose up to 1.5 psi per month. It could take up to 6 months to lose that much pressure with a Nitrogen inflated tire, thereby decreasing the potential for a tire blowout.

Inflating your tires with Nitrogen also increases fuel efficiency and increases tire treadlife. Furthermore, regular air and moisture can cause the tire wheel to rust, a very common cause of tire deflation. By eliminating oxygen and humidity by using Nitrogen, this safety problem is significantly reduced.

The benefits of Nitrogen tire inflation have been used by Nascar, the Commercial Airline industry and the U.S. Government and Military for years. Isn’t it time for you to reap the benefits of Nitrogen tire inflation at City Tire?

Here at City Tire we understand tire maintenance is not only confusing, it can be a little inconvenient. Following are some important tips about tire maintenance and how City Tire is prepared to make it a little easier for you!

The Rubber Manufacturers Association(RMA) has created the phrase, “Be Tire Smart, Play Your P.A.R.T” as an easy reminder about tire maintenance.

P= Pressure Underinflation is the #1 enemy of Tires. It can cause irregular wear or even worse, can cause internal damage to the tire leading to a blowout. Don’t let this happen to you, check your air pressure once a month. To make it even easier, stop by City Tire for a free air pressure check monthly!

A= Alignment Hit any potholes or curbs lately? If you have, your front end alignment may need attention. A vehicle that is out of alignment will tend to pull/drift to the left or right making the vehicle more difficult to control. Also, misalignment also causes uneven treadwear on your tires, shortening the treadlife of the tire and reducing traction. Let a City Tire alignment expert set you straight!

R= Rotation The basic guidline for tire rotation is every 6,000 miles. Rotation, along with proper alignment and inflation, is critical to the even wear of tires! Each wheel position has different wear characteristics, so it is very important to get each tire in each wheel position via rotation to “even out” these differences.

T= Tread It is very important to inspect the tread of your tires monthly. Quick or irregular wear can greatly effect a tires’ ability to grip the road. Needless to say, gripping the road is the only job a tire has, so this is a very important safety inspection! City Tire is happy to professionally inspect your tires free of charge at any time!

Visit www.rma.org/tire_safety and www.tiresafety.com for more info!

We are pleased you stopped by! Come back often to check out what’s happening at City Tire, and to get helpful information on tire and car maintenance.

For starters, let’s talk about fuel economy.
Gas prices are sky high, with no signs of relief in the near future. This has put great pressure on many an American’s budget. Furthermore, for businesses that rely on over-the-road transportation, their fuel costs have skyrocketed!! These additional costs ultimately get passed on to the American consumer through price increases for goods and services.

What can you do to conserve gas? How can City Tire help?

Tip #1:
Keep your tires properly inflated. This can save you 5% at the pump compared to under-inflated tires. (Source: AAA) Stop by any of our 9 locations for a free inflation check.

Tip #2:
Keep your vehicle properly aligned. An improperly aligned vehicle can decrease fuel efficiency by as much as 10% ( Source: Car Care Council), and also cause premature tire wear. Don’t let this happen to you; visit City Tire for an alignment check (FREE with the purchase of 4 tires).

Tip #3:
Vehicle maintenance also plays a crucial role in fuel economy. By changing your oil every 3000 miles, you can improve your mileage by as much as 1 mile per gallon (up to 12%) compared to dirty oil (Source: Car Care Council). Also, using the proper grade, i.e. 10w30, 5w30, is very important. Not using the correct grade of oil can decrease miles per gallon by 1-2% (Source: fueleconomy.gov) Visit City Tire for your professional lube, oil and filter service today!

Tip #4:
Dirty air filters are a major component of decreased fuel economy. Clogged air filters cause a “rich” fuel/air mixture. This means too much gas is being burned for the amount of air that is present. Not only does this cause a decrease in engine power, it can also rob you of 10% of your fuel efficiency! (Source: Car Care Council) City Tire stocks air filters for most vehicles. We’d be happy to give your air filter a free inspection, or we can combine it with any other service, free of charge.

Tip #5:
Keeping your engine properly “tuned” can improve gas mileage by 4% in a car that needs a tune up. If your vehicle has serious “tune up” maintenance problems, the improvement can be as much as 40%! (Source: fueleconomy.gov) Let City Tire’s experienced technicians evaluate your tune-up needs.

Tip #6:
Here’s the toughest one of all: Slow Down!!!!!!! Gas mileage decreases significantly over 60 mph. As a rule of thumb, you can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying and additional $0.20 per gallon of gas! (Source: fueleconomy.gov). Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by 33% on the highway and 5% in the city (Source: Car Care Council)!!!!!
